Ron Paul in the Republican Debate in South Carolina

17 01 2008

On January 10, 2008, Fox News sponsored a Republican Presidential Debate at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which aired on national TV.  Held at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, with an audience of some 3,000 people, it was called the “First in the South:  The South Carolina Republican Presidential Candidates Debate.”

The debate was officially sponsored by Fox News and the South Carolina Republican Party and was broadcast on the Fox News Channel, Fox News Radio, and FoxNews.com.

The candidates who participated included former Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, Senator John McCain of Arizona, former Mayor Rudy Giuiliani of New York City, Representative Ron Paul of Texas, former Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, and former Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee.  Fox News moderators included Brit Hume, Chris Wallace, Carl Cameron, and Wendell Goler.

Here is a full-length video of the Fox News Debate at Myrtle Beach, SC (posted on You Decide 2008.)

Regarding Ron Paul’s part in the debate, a number of things could be said.  One of his responses reportedly was removed from all re-airings and was also removed from YouTube 12 hours after being uploaded.

On YouTube, the debate has roughly been divided into 10-minute intervals.  I will make note of the portions and time intervals that include questions relating to Dr. Ron Paul (although it seems like he was given the toughest questions to answer and the least amount of time to respond).

Hmmmm… Why would they remove segments and only segments of Ron Paul? Interesting enough without all the spin eh?

I imagine they pulled that question for the following reasons:
– their bias is clearly obvious;
– they didn’t expect Ron Paul to answer that question as well as he did; and,
– Carl Cameron comes off looking like a nasty, arrogant attack dog.

In other words, blowback. That question backfired on them and makes Fox look bad.

I know it’s not very libertarian of me, but I’d like to see Fox News lose their FCC license.
